Thoughts On Opening the Bible at 2 AM

Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow:
they toil not, neither do they spin.
—Matt 6:28

The lilies of the field are dying now

From drought and from disease. If they had labored

Puritanically, I wonder how

Things would have changed. Maybe if a neighbor’d

Given food, or helped them move to more

Protected fields, disaster might have been

Averted. We should teach them how to store

Water for sunny days, and how to spin;

To clothe uncovered parts and fear the night;

To search for cures for every new affliction:

They’d learn to hoard their goods, and trade, and fight,

And stimulate bored minds with modern fiction.

They’d hail the advent of each holiday,

And when life turned against them, they could pray.
