Selling Price

She wanted none of us to know.
She sold below her lowest low.
A son-in-law, a glance askance—
slid up—and then the moving van
snapping untrimmed maple branches,
nosed the curb and dropped its ramp.
It wasn’t until they pulled away
that the price came speeding down the block.
Everyone heard it. We all looked up,

but nobody could make it stop.
